What does a Backflow Preventers Do?

A water backflow prevention device is a device that works to protect potable water from contamination or pollution due to backflow. Simply put, it’s essentially a device that stops water from flowing backwards due to back pressure or back siphonage. This backflow could introduce contaminated liquids, gases, or suspended solids into your drinking water. Your backflow preventer when operating correctly prevents this from happening. This is essential for protecting our city water main.

How often do I need my backflow tested?

Backflow devices are required to be tested annually or any time the backflow has been repaired. In some cases testing my be required to be done more frequently by the user due to the hazard.

How long will my water be off?

Water interruption is brief in most cases during testing. Repairs very depending on the extent of the repair. This is determined on a case by case bases.

Do I need to be home or present during testing?

No. Unless there is need for access to the backflow location. Example: backflow is located in a building or garage, locked or in a fenced area. In these cases arrangements can be made.

What happens if I don't get my device tested?
 

Not having your backflow tested can result in fines from your local water agency or termination of your water service. Once the water has been terminated, a restoration fee may be charged by your local water agency.
